I currently persuing a career in medical transcription. I have 3 years past experience as a transcriber for a hospital radiology department – that was 10 years ago. Is it necessary for me to attend a certificate program in order for me to get a job doing this from home or will my experience help?

Please let me know the names of any good online schools.

Thank you.

A certificate is not required to do medical transcription, however some hirers will require CMT. I would consider applying for radiology transcription now.

If you choose to further your education, though, there are probably a hundred different opinions for each course that’s available to you. Overall I believe that a course you can personally attend is best.

Online or in-person, though, I would suggest taking a very close look at the curriculum for each course you are considering. A course that includes a comprehensive anatomy section will endow you with a basic knowledge of bodily systems and the word roots associated with them. This is essential for accurate transcription and will ensure your continued employment and/or success in branching out on your own as an independent service provider.

Lastly, look for a school that has some sort of job placement program and look into its details before signing up.

Good luck!

Okay, everyone knows that there are many stages to having a good interview and that Interview Tips can make the difference between getting a job and letting yourself down at interview. Initially you have to ensure that you have undertaken research on the businesses you are thinking about emailing your CV to.

In this way you can tailor the look and feel of your CV to each of the jobs applied to. You must make sure that you remember what you have written on your CV because when it comes to the interview you might discover you are questioned on some of the things you have written.

Ensure that before you go for interview that you have got out an outfit that shows you in the best light for the role, cleaned shoes, and tidy hair. If you are unsure of where the job is based, for example say the Job is in Bournemouth it’s of benefit looking it up using something like Google maps to work out your way and if possible driving the way before you go for interview so that you have some idea how long the journey will take and then give yourself more time to get there.

Ensure that you know who you should meet when you arrive at the interview and if you can who will be taking you for your interview. Last but not least before you leave your home ensure you get together all of the paperwork and information that they have requested in a neat pile ready for the following day.

Once you arrive at the place where you are getting your interview, be polite and let the people you are their to talk to know that you have arrived by speaking to the receptionist. When your interviewer arrives stand upright and shake their hand, giving them eye contact and smiling.

Ensure that you you have things to ask about the company you are having the meeting with and that you are positive about them. Speak clearly and calmly and stay focused on what is being asked of you and try not to get tense. Be honest in your meeting and tell them precisely what skills you have or where you have worked, don’t fall into the trap of being negative about your former employer as it will be seen as poor form.

During the meeting, stay bright, upright and interested ask questions where appropriate and stay focused, if there are location reasons why the job might be of benefit to make sure you make them aware why that Job in Dorset will be of benefit to you and to them.

When the interview comes to a close ask the interviewer when you can expect to know about the role and ensure that if you are interested in the job that you let the person know that you are very interested in being part of their team.

I wanted to know the best way of going about getting my foot in the door of the insurance or medical billing/ coding field? I’m from CA and have a felony (drug) so I wanted to know if that would be a problem. Also if anyone has any info on the annual income it brings in?

I would advise you to look into training classes at academic colleges. That is what I did. I went to a business/technical school and now I work in the billing/coding profession. It took me a total of about 9 months to finish my courses.

I wouldn’t think having a felony would be a problem as long as it has been a few years without any charges. Although I am not the one going to be hiring you and everyone feels different. Annual income is going to vary depending on the city you live in and the cost of living. Like CA is going to pay more than TN is going to pay.

Are you looking for home medical transcription? Medical transcriptionists swiftly and accurately interpret through doctor’s dictation, the medical records of patients into medically and grammatically precise reports.

The interactions between the patient and his physician require transcription. Some of these include:

Surgical procedures

Medical consultations

Diagnoses

Prognoses
Prescriptions

Radiological or other laboratory results

Dissemination of the patients’ medical history

Autopsy reports

Medical transcription involves picking up dictation via tape, voice file and digital system using foot pedal for start-stop control, ear phones and a word processing program.

You can either choose to conduct medical transcription as an independent worker or an employee with benefits

Requirements

Because the dictations involve many medical terminologies, you need to recognize, be familiar with and understand medical procedure, terminology and anatomy.

Likewise, English grammar and outstanding typing accuracy and speed are required, as well as keen listening ability and the patience to sit for hours through heavy concentration.

Training

A certified medical transcription’ title will be beneficial in demonstrating your expertise when looking for clients.

You need to invest in your training, except if you had ‘on-the-job’ experience or healthcare background.

Medical transcription programs costs vary, averaging 3,000 dollars.

You can start only to promote yourself being a certified medical transcriptionist if you successfully have completed the examination on certification governed by the AAMT or ‘American Association for Medical Transcription’.

Once you have obtained the certification, fulfilling recertification requirements are necessary periodically to uphold this credential, by way of continuing education programs.

medical transcription courses can be taken through these formats:

Community college course

Correspondence distance education

Vocational school

Internet learning courses

Setting up the home office

You will also be investing in your home equipment and put up a workspace.

Necessary equipments are a Dictaphone with foot pedal or any other equivalent telephone devices to accept dictation, headset, PC with word processing capability, medical dictionary and manual resources for pharmacology and anatomy, medical spellchecker as well as extensive abbreviation tool like Smartype or Instant Text.

Charging

Many medical transcriptionists are charging per page while others charge per hour. If you can type fast, it will be beneficial to both you and your clients if you charge per hour. Whereas if your typing speed is on the average, you can charge per page.

Where as the majority of medical transcriptionists work at home alone, your healthcare industry provides networking opportunities and continuing education as well that might be worth checking.

Thankfully, there is the Internet, where medical transcriptionists are able to offer their services from anywhere, download files, transcribe and submit to clients through it.

I am wanting to start doing medical transcription from home and am looking for all the information on this I can get. If it’s worth it, etc…

I don’t know how much actual money you would make doing but do know that most all companies was 2 years of outside before companies will let someone do it from home. But from what I have heard, the money can be good but don’t know what this means in dollar amounts.

I have a work from home website and the companies I have even listed want people with experience.

I also belong to many work at home forums and people have stated this and have been upset to have taken online medical transcription and courses only to find out they need experience working in outside setting first before they can apply to companies who hire from home. I just thought I should mention this to you since you are interested in doing this from home.

If you’re looking to switch careers, you might consider a home medical transcription. If you are interested in medical transcription a transcriptionist is someone who interprets and transcribes dictation by healthcare professionals. There are many benefits to a career in this field.

For instance, you can, in many cases, work out of your own home at your own pace. Also, the demand for jobs is pretty high right now, provided you know what you’re doing. Most professionals seeking out a transcription service prefer someone who has been through training at a community college or trade school and has some work experience.

Besides the proper training, you’ll need the proper equipment. Since a medical transcriptionist listens to dictated information using a recording device and headset, you’ll need to purchase these items.

A foot peddle is also necessary to start and stop the recording device and the information you gather will have to be entered onto a computer or word processor. You will also need medical and pharmaceutical directories since you’ll be expected to know the proper terminology.

If any words or phrases are unfamiliar to you, it will be your responsibility to look them up in one of the aforementioned reference books. You should know the principles of basic grammar and be able to spell check and proof read your own work. Since you’ll be transcribing dictated information, you’ll also need to be a good listener.

Whether you’re working through a online medical transcription service or on your own as an independent contractor, the type of clients you have will probably include doctor’s offices, hospitals, free clinics and rehab centers.

You’ll be transcribing any number of documents including patient histories, autopsy reports, referral letters, consultation reports and other medical records.

If you’re interested in a medical transcription career, you must first get the proper education. Courses in this field are available at colleges, trade schools and even online. Most programs take about two years and some require you to work an internship at a medical facility.

Further information regarding a home medical transcription career in this rewarding field can be gathered at the library or on the Internet. Good luck!
