Many work at home moms do more than one thing to earn money. It is not at all uncommon to meet moms who earn money from both a job and a home business. The challenge is balancing them with being a stay at home mom.
The first word of warning I would have for anyone feeling that both a job and business are necessary in order to earn enough money is to avoid piling on too much at once. You need to know how much time each will really take before you put them together.
In fact, I would strongly recommend that you choose to start one, figure out how much time it is taking once you are comfortable in it, before adding to your duties. Even if you really need the extra money, taking on too much is not a good idea. In fact, it can leave you earning less.
You will need to have your priorities set. When I was doing medical transcription, it came first and my home business came second. I knew what I would be earning for my work when it came to transcription. My websites I couldn’t be certain at all. Even though they were (and still are) much more fun to work on, they had to come second so that I could earn enough money.
In many cases, a work at home job will require that you work a certain number of hours or even a set schedule. That can determine how much a priority it is as well.
Of course, a home business can require quite a bit of dedication too. Your business won’t get anywhere if you just ignore it. And if you fail to keep up on your promises, your customers won’t come back to you, may want refunds, and you’ll end up with a troubled business.
The real challenge can come from finding enough time for your family when you are doing this kind of balancing act. Make sure you include time for your family when you think about how much you can work. Consider daycare or babysitter options if you need more time than is possible with your children at home.
The more time you want to dedicate to any kind of working at home, the more support from your family you will need as well. Make sure everyone in your home understands why you may sometimes be less available than they would like. These discussions won’t always solve the tensions, but they can help.
When you hit those times where you just seem to have too much to do, you may have to think about cutting back. Taking a little time away or just working a little less can solve many problems and sometimes give you a fresh outlook. It’s not always possible, but if it is make sure you know when you need to do it.
It is challenging but possible to have both a work at home job and a home business. But it’s a great way to keep earning money when you don’t want to work outside the home. Just be sure you can handle what you are getting into. And try to enjoy it!

Further Information on home medical transcription
What are some good resources for information on medical transcription ?
I am interested in learning more about the medical transcription field. What are some good resources where I could find information regarding training courses, job outlook–things of that nature?
The 2 best websites for this are your state’s Department of Labor website, and a website called O*NET (Occupational Information Network). They both have info about average wages nationally and state-by-state, job responsibilities, personality requirements, etc. I have looked up Medical Transcription on both websites and they are pretty good.
If you don’t find anything on your state’s DOL website, go onto your state’s Unemployment website – they normally have a section with info about training programs for medical transcription careers. Since Medical Transcription is in demand, it will be there, with info about local schools that offer the program, how much it costs, requirements, etc.
Good luck!

How To Become a medical transcriptionist
A medical transcriptionist listens to dictated recordings made by healthcare professionals (such as physicians) and transcribes or records in text what has been recorded using a computer or word processor.
The medical transcriptionist has to ensure that the text is clear, accurate, and is free from grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. Documents are returned to the healthcare professional who signs each document off once it has been reviewed for accuracy. The final documents can be …

I am considering a career in medical transcription and am wondering if you must be certified, have a degree, or is it something you learn on the job? I’d like to do it from home on a part time basis. Any info would be great, thanks!
Do not be fooled by companies that say they will train you for free. They actually charge nearly $500 for their medical transcription training software and FEW people ever actually get hired. I’m surprised the company linked on this thread is still in business to be honest w/ you. You can train either w/ an online school, be wise, and choose a good one. You can also train through a community college.
I trained with www.meditec.com. They have an awesome internship program to help you get started with your first job. You do not have to be certified to work. However, the AHDI does have two levels of certification testing for MTs, IF you want it.
Graduating from a good school should train you well enough to pass the RMT exam, if you want to take it. You can work w/o it. Then, after you have a few years of acute care transcription experience, you can test for the CMT. Your medical transcription training will take 2-3 years depending on your experience.

A holistic approach to the study of medical transcription, is a comprehensive, yet concise, manual written by a practicing medical transcriptionist for student medical transcriptionists.
This conversational approach, filled with practical, “from- the-trenches” tips and advice, makes this book particularly valuable to the new transcriptionist entering the field.
Compatible with the AHDI Model Curriculum and designed with the adult-vocational and post-secondary school student in mind, this product meets the needs of both students and instructors. It can serve as the primary textbook in a short-term medical transcription course as well as be used for independent, on-line study.
After completing the exercises and activities in this book, students will be able to prepare standard medical reports accurately and efficiently. They will also be well-versed in the fundamentals of anatomy and medical terminology as used in various medical specialty practices. We also advise home medical transcription for a home business opportunity.

I would like to find a great medical transcription online school. I would like to go straight from completing the course to working out of my home, so I can still be home with my 2 children. I was also wondering how difficult it is to get hired working from home if I’ve never had on the job training?
I took my course through Education Direct–I think they are called Penn Foster now–and I enjoyed every minute of it!! Going straight to completing the course into home medical transcription work can be difficult, but it definantly can be done. Once you are finished with your medical transctiption training there are a couple sites you can go to to look for work.
http://mtstars.com and http://mtjobs.com and quite often they hire new people for at-home work.
Hope this helps you.
