I am currently in school for home medical transcription classes. The school will help place me in a good job, however, I am wanting to be at home with the kids. I know that alot of people do it at home, but I need to know what the best equipment and resources are so that I can start off strong. Any soft-ware or books or equipment that anyone knows of, please let me know.
Express Scribe is a free transcription software program that you can download off the internet. This will enable you to transcribe audio files from your computer once you get a foot pedal and a headset. The link is below: http://www.nch.com.au/scribe/ Please know, however, that the company you work for may have their own transcription platform, such as Winscribe, Bytescribe, etc.
If the company has their own transcription platform, you would not have to use Express Scribe; the company will tell you how to download or access their platform. What type of foot pedal you need depends greatly upon the kind of computer you have and the company you will be transcribing for; again, many companies will tell you what kind of foot pedal to purchase.
Most newer computers would take a USB foot pedal that you would simply plug in to the computer tower (CPU). Older computers would require a 9-pin serial port foot pedal; you also hook this up to your computer tower. Also, you would need a headset that would plug directly into your CPU. I would suggest a good noise canceling headset. Click on the Transcription Gear link to see headsets also. You can acquire lots of good information simply by asking, and they also have a classified section in which you can buy used equipment from other transcriptionists.

If so, check with your former employers to see if they have anything you can do at home. If you don’t have any experience, you’ll probably have to first work in an office or medical facility before you can find a work at home medical transcription job.

To be honest they are few and far between with the new technologies that hospitals are using now. My mother did home medical transcription work, until the family practice that she worked for changed to voice recognition.
She hasn’t been able to keep a job since then and that was two years ago. Every company she works will boot her out for new technology within a couple months. Try looking at small doctor owned family practices.
They tend to run very cheap and aren’t willing to pay for the new technology.
