I have been in medical transcriptionist jobs for 17 years and am looking at home medical transcription. My first two years was in radiology, neurology, and non-invasive cardiology. I have been transcribing psychiatric transcription for a medical transcription clinic for about 15 years now.

I type 120-140 WPM and have been told that at home medical transcription would be ideal for me.

Also, we plan on moving out of state in less than a year (from Oklahoma to West Virginia), and I will need another job. My question is will my experience be good enough (since I’ve been transcribing only psychiatry for the past 15 years)? Will I need a refresher course? I have an associate’s degree in Medical Secretarial Science from a two-year university (OSU-Okmulgee — Okmulgee, Oklahoma)

Because of your experience, I would say you could get a medical transcription from home job with litle problems and some medical transcription training would be helpful too. You might try looking for a psych account first, but if you can’t find one, search for radiology transcription jobs.

I’m not sure that you could get an acute care account since you don’t actually have experience with that. I advise you to search out home medical transcription as it is a great opportunity in todays economy and this site gives valuable information on all aspects of MT. Good luck!

Is there financial aid available to do medical transcription from an online school?

I am interested in seeking a certification in medical transcription so I can work from home, but do not wish to go back to (& can’t afford to) school full time for 2 years to do so and would like to get certified from a course such as Career Step or similar. I wondered if there is financial aid available to help pay for that?

What are the safe guards against home-based medical transcription/billing as far as keeping my records safe?

What are some of the safeguards that you could or have in place to protect my medical records, and what should I also want to add to keep them safe?

To log in to the system, it’s usually double password protected. There are firewalls hooked up, and each person’s computer should be inspected to make sure there is no spyware on there. There is also no option for the person to print anything at home, even if the computer is hooked up to a computer, they can’t print off the system. I’m not sure what you mean by the rest of your question……

I want to start 10 seater medical transcription company in India and I’m looking for a break. I can provide the services at a very competitive cost (10 cents per line) and can produce 800 lines per seat per day.
medical transcription is becoming a big trend in todays medical field. Especially with smaller MD offices.

They do not have the staff to do this task. So usually, one would have several MD offices on contract to do their transcriptions. Good money too. Local community colleges offer a course. In just a short time you could be certified. Check your local community college or look in the free ADs paper, like “thirty nickel”, or “green sheet” there is usually ads in them that could help you.

Good Luck David F

A Career in Medical Transcription a Great Way to Earn an Income At Home

So you are interested in a career in medical transcription and would like to find out more.  You are in the right place!

Another term for a medical transcriptionist is “medical language specialist”.  This gives you a hint to what it is all about.

A medical transcriptionist is responsible for transcribing medical reports accurately.  Anytime there is an interaction with a medical professional and patient, doctors dictate information for a medical document.

There are a few personal attributes you will need to make a career medical transcription.  They are being –

•           Great with words

•           Able to maintain deadlines

•           Able to work on your own

•           Self disciplined

•           A good listener

•           Detail oriented

•           Self motivated

You fit the mould – great!

Next we need to understand a couple of things about the field.  Medical transcription opportunities for new entry transcriptionists are rarely advertised on the internet or in newspapers but you will find plenty available.

For a few reasons, medical officials decided to go directly to medical transcription classes, training courses and schools that offer medical transcription job assistance.

They look for students that have completed the courses and are competent.  The key is competence.

By being competent, you are looking at a minimum typing speed of 60 words per minute (wpm), the faster, the better.  Accuracy is even more important.  Your accuracy will need to be 98% plus.  Again, the higher the better.

Now don’t be scared off just yet…

There are great programs you can use to increase your typing speed. And, good medical transcription colleges will aide you in achieving these levels with your determination and some hard work.

Any medical experience you have, although not necessary, will certainly advantage you in your career in medical transcription.  Demand for nurse medical transcriptionists is very high!

The thing is if you already have a strong understanding of medical terminology and you can reach the competence levels, you may well be accepted for work.

There is a strong and growing demand in the medical transcription industry for excellent transcriptionists.

The US Department of Labor says that medical transcription careers will have strong growth over the next several years.

The future for a career in medical transcription is extremely promising as the first of the Boomers hit 65 in 2011.   Those born during the baby boom years of 1946 to 1964 are aging and the demand for medical care is growing with their aging…

I am an RN with excellent typing and computer skills. I have not taken any medical transcription courses. I feel like I am completely capable of medical transcription, but will any company hire me without any actual courses? There are so many courses available online I can’t tell if they are a scam or not (does anyone actually find work after completing the courses).

Thanks.

No, no one will hire you except for possibly a small physician’s office. Hospitals and all online companies require knowledge in medical transcription itself, from schooling, as well as on-the-job experience in the field.

Editors Comment:  From our research nurse medical transcriptionists are in demand.  It may be worth you contacting your local AHDI group and getting their view for your region.

Anyone who says medical transcription is going to be obsolete is talking through his hat. Medical transcription is almost already a paperless job. Transcribed files are uploaded into the hospital records in the computer system.

The physicians refer/access them in the computer system as and when required. As someone already mentioned, there will always be tough dictators whose dictation is hard to understand and whose transcription would require lot of hearing skills and transcription experience. These physicians always require the skills of transcriptionists 24/7.

Any future doubts/clarifications are graciously invited at prashanth_142@yahoo.co.in
