I have been in medical transcriptionist jobs for 17 years and am looking at home medical transcription. My first two years was in radiology, neurology, and non-invasive cardiology. I have been transcribing psychiatric transcription for a medical transcription clinic for about 15 years now.

I type 120-140 WPM and have been told that at home medical transcription would be ideal for me.

Also, we plan on moving out of state in less than a year (from Oklahoma to West Virginia), and I will need another job. My question is will my experience be good enough (since I’ve been transcribing only psychiatry for the past 15 years)? Will I need a refresher course? I have an associate’s degree in Medical Secretarial Science from a two-year university (OSU-Okmulgee — Okmulgee, Oklahoma)

Because of your experience, I would say you could get a medical transcription from home job with litle problems and some medical transcription training would be helpful too. You might try looking for a psych account first, but if you can’t find one, search for radiology transcription jobs.

I’m not sure that you could get an acute care account since you don’t actually have experience with that. I advise you to search out home medical transcription as it is a great opportunity in todays economy and this site gives valuable information on all aspects of MT. Good luck!

What are some of the safeguards that you could or have in place to protect my medical records, and what should I also want to add to keep them safe?

To log in to the system, it’s usually double password protected. There are firewalls hooked up, and each person’s computer should be inspected to make sure there is no spyware on there. There is also no option for the person to print anything at home, even if the computer is hooked up to a computer, they can’t print off the system. I’m not sure what you mean by the rest of your question……

My mom is a medical transcriptionist from home. She took a course, like the ones you see advertised on TV. She didn’t think it totally prepared her, but she fortunately got on with a company who was willing to train her. Most companies want several years experience before they’ll hire you.

You also should look at the difference between being an employee or an independant contractor. Employee gets benefits but you usually gotta set hours and meet minimums. ICs are usually more free to work when they want/can, but no benefits.

Also consider the quality of work. So many doctors are foreign and VERY hard to understand. Also, depending on the system the company uses, sound quality could suck. Don’t think it’s an easy job you can just pick up and do at will with kids running around. My mom said there was no way she ever could have done it when my bro and I were kids.

Wow, I sound really negative…lets go positive for a little while. You can work from home in my jammies! If you’re a night owl, you can set your hours to work at night! Sorry, that’s all the positive I can think of now…my mom’s been struggling with her company for a couple years now, so all I hear is negative. Give it a try if you want…or you could give general transcription a shot. It doesn’t pay as well, but it’s usually easier and more flexible

It is estimated that medical transcription workers held about 105,000 jobs in 2004; three out of ten working out of their home. If you are interested in pursuing a medical transcription work at home job here is some information which you may find useful.

The latest statistics assert that employment for medical transcription at home jobs will grow faster than average for all occupations through the year 2014. This is largely due to the fact that the aging population will increase in number, thus a high level of demand will increase in this area. Older age groups receive greater numbers of medical tests, treatments, and procedures that require documentation.

A home medical transcription position will require the amending of patients’ records, editing documents, and identifying discrepancies in medical reports. Thus, the worker’s ability to understand and correctly transcribe patient assessments and treatments reduces the chance of patients receiving ineffective or even harmful treatments and ensures high-quality patient care.

Many medical transcription at home workers telecommute from home-based offices as employees or subcontractors for hospitals and transcription services or as self-employed, independent contractors.

Medical transcription work at home, although not requiring a full 40-hour week, may require the employee to be on call at any time. The primary function of this position is to listen to dictated recordings made by physicians and other health care professionals and transcribe them into medical reports, correspondence, and other administrative material.

Using a headset to listen to the recordings, and a foot pedal to stop, pause and stop these recordings is a requirement. Many of the online medical transcription at home jobs sites have links promoting these various products for their potential workers.

However, the most important function of the medical transcription work at home worker is to have a clear understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, pharmacology and treatment assessments. To this end, several online medical transcription employers may mandate the certification of the job applicant.

Most online employers offer this certification course while at the same time, maintaining employment. It also goes without saying; the employee must maintain strict patient confidentiality as it pertains to the information they are asked to transcribe.

There are some drawbacks to this type of work; whether working at home or an office. Sitting for hours at a time can be problematic. Workers can suffer wrist, back, neck or eye problems associated with the strain and repetitive motion used in completing daily tasks.

In addition, while work at home medical transcription services may be sporadic, nonetheless the employee may find it stressful to not only complete the assignment, but be accurate and productive as well.

Currently, most employers provide software in addition to peripheral tools to assist the employee in effectively completing each assignment. Many transcription workers receive dictation over the internet and are able to quickly return transcribed documents to clients for approval.

Transcriptionists working in areas with standardized terminology, such as radiology or pathology, are more likely to encounter speech recognition technology. However, use of speech recognition technology will become more widespread as the technology becomes more sophisticated.

For the moment, however, the tools currently provided are sufficient for the medical transcription work at home worker to effectively master the information given, and produce output commensurate with employers’ expectation.

There are not a lot of legit at home data entry jobs. For medical transcription, you need quality training. Choose a GOOD school w/ an internship.

I do this too and have been for the past 18 years. The only place I know of right now that offers in-home positions is called MAG Mutual Health Care Solutions, Inc. I was employed by them for a short time after they took over the on-site Transcription Department of the clinic where I worked.

At that time I wasn’t looking for in-home work so I rather quickly found an on-site position and took it. However, with gas prices being what they are now….I’m in the market for an in-home position again. MAG won’t do re-hires (or didn’t the last time I checked), so if you hear of anyone else available….let me know!!! ;o) and good luck with your search!!
