Can you really do Medical Transcription from home?

Was looking into getting a degree either online or from the local college. But is this a realistic job you can do from home? Any suggestions from someone actually working in this field would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Yes you can do this from home but the major misconception is that it is immediate. IT IS NOT. You could wait possibly two years or more before the company will give you the tools and allow you to work from home.

Then again there are people who have been working for 10 and still do not work at home. Whether or not it is their choice I cannot say. Not to mention for the most part the whole “career” is a waste of time and energy. Even after schooling the job is still low pay. Many people can make more working at WalMart. So in the end I suggest you looking into something else much more worth while.

Good luck.

Editors Comment:  This is one opinion, though certainly not the view of everyone!  There are ways to achieve higher pay rates by specializing in demand sectors of medical transcription

Is at-home medical transcription for me?

Here are my stats in a nutshell: –Type 120-140 WPM –Associates degree in medical transcription –1991-1993: Worked in hospital typing radiology, neurology, and non-invasive cardiology –1992-Present: Work at a mental health facility typing psychiatric/psychology transcription.

What are the chances of me getting on in a full-time at-home transcription job? (I realize I may have to take a two- or three-month refresher course in medical terminology because a lot has changed since the early 90s)

You already have an excellent background that will make you attractive to companies that employ medical transcriptionists. Your typing skills are excellent, and you already have a background in medical terminology. I’m not sure you’ll need a refresher course. Medical terms are a combination of very consistent prefixes, suffixes, and root words. If you know those, you can decipher most unfamiliar medical terms.

What you may need to brush up on are the latest abbreviations and acronyms, such as NOTES, natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery. Working at home requires a different set of skills. Are you disciplined and self-motivated?

Can you schedule regular work hours at your home office, or will you be tempted to turn on the TV and watch Rachel Ray rather than complete assignments? Even though you’ll be working from home, you still need to treat it like a real job.

I’ve worked from home for the past 16 years now and have found it to be perfect for me…it offers flexibility and eliminates transportation issues. I wish you success in your at-home venture. Cyndy http://www.theaccidentalmedicalwriter.com

Should I leave my steady job and do at home medical transcription full-time?

I type 100-120 words per minute I worked for two years in multi-specialty transcription (1991 through 1993) October 1993 – Current: I work for a mental health agency where I am a medical transcriptionist by title. I still type doctor’s notes, but mostly type meeting minutes now, so I’ve been out of multi-speciality transcription for a long time.

Also, my husband is on Social Security Disability for a refractory seizure disorder (he cannot work and he stays home). He is Cherokee Indian, so he gets free medical care. I am thinking of doing at-home transcription so I can stay home with my disabled husband and better use my abilities.

What are some good, legit medical transcription companies, especially those that offer health insurance? Any serious responses would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Inquiry which could have implications for me and my husband’s future. Thank you in advance.)

Absolutely you should do that; much better for both of you; as to finding viable companies go to monster.com and post your resume there and also check your local hospitals. You might also post your own ad stating what you’re looking for work-wise and salary-wise.

Does anybody know how to start a home medical transcription business?

I’m in New Jersey and I want to work from home as a medical transcriptionist. I know a few doctors who can avail of my service but I’m not familiar how the process of taking their dictations and having them send those dictations to me for transcription goes, like should I send them a recording machine or anything like that?

Do you know a website for work-at-home MTs? Thanks so much. your replies will be highly appreciated.

It helps to have a good understanding of the business before you jump into it. You don’t need to be certified or even have a degree in it, but it certainly helps. It’s also beneficial for you to take a course or two for medical terminology – this is a major factor in transcribing – to understand what the doctor is trying to say with an accent, eating his lunch and dictating at the same time :)
