Is there financial aid available to do medical transcription from an online school?

I am interested in seeking a certification in medical transcription so I can work from home, but do not wish to go back to (& can’t afford to) school full time for 2 years to do so and would like to get certified from a course such as Career Step or similar. I wondered if there is financial aid available to help pay for that?

Along with this comes the need for more health care and demand on all aspects of the health industry.  What all this means is that the medical transcription field is expecting growth in a field that is already in demand!

The future for transcriptionists looks great…

So, what does a medical transcriptionist do?

Another term for a medical transcriptionist is a medical language specialist.  Their work involves the act of converting voice recordings (dictation) from a health care professional into text documentation.

The work is suited to people with particular characteristics although anyone can be trained in medical transcription as long as they fit these basic requirements.  A passion for medicine certainly helps.

I am taking a medical transcription course online and I am thinking of buying an Acer netbook. Will it work well for this?

It depends. You will need a USB port for your foot pedal, and a port for your headset. You will need to be able to connect to the Internet, download files, and you should be able to print. I would recommend a fully loaded laptop.

You will need a good system anyway in order to work as an MT.

The medical transcription industry has changed and continues to do so with the advent of digital technology. To keep performing in this exciting industry you need to understand and be using or at least understand how to use the digital technology to your best advantage.

Our advice is to make sure that you are familiar and competent with voice recognition software. The speech to text software looks set to become a major factor in the industry. Rather than a transcriptionist be afraid of voice recognition software it is best to gain experience with the technology.

The medical transcriptionist’s role is heading more and more to work editing transcribed work. Another important piece of equipment for the medical transcriptionist is their desk. Medical transcription desks and chairs need to be set up correctly.

This can make an incredible difference to the productivity of the transcriptionist. For a medical transcriptionist productivity equals income so it is well worth the time making sure that your desk and chair are set up ergonomically correctly.

There are also quite a number of things to take into consideration before you purchase your transcriptionists chair. Little things can make a big difference when you are sitting in one position for extended periods as you are when you do medical transcription work.

What is a good online medical transcription training program?

The Andrews School based out of Oklahoma is the best, imo. That’s the program I used and even though I didn’t complete it (couldn’t motivate myself to finish – I was working full-time) the materials and support were top notch. It’s also one of the most expensive… $3800. for the whole program when I was doing it about 6 years ago.

There’s two other programs I also kept coming back to out of all the programs I researched and they are: M-TEC and Career Step. These three were the best that I could find. http://www.careerstep.com/workathome/?uid=a0321 http://www.andrewsschool.com/ http://www.mtecinc.com/

Good luck – they are all excellent schools!

I have tons of books and software from my medical transcription course, most of them are brand new. I am trying to sell them and want to know the best way to get rid of them? I have listed them on eBay, but they are not selling well. I have all of the SUM cd’s, book of style, foot pedal, medical dictionary, etc.

Continue to try Ebay. Also try craigslist, a yard sale, and a used book store. However, if you are going into the medical field, you might as well keep the medical dictionary.

It is estimated that medical transcription workers held about 105,000 jobs in 2004; three out of ten working out of their home. If you are interested in pursuing a medical transcription work at home job here is some information which you may find useful.

The latest statistics assert that employment for medical transcription at home jobs will grow faster than average for all occupations through the year 2014. This is largely due to the fact that the aging population will increase in number, thus a high level of demand will increase in this area. Older age groups receive greater numbers of medical tests, treatments, and procedures that require documentation.

A home medical transcription position will require the amending of patients’ records, editing documents, and identifying discrepancies in medical reports. Thus, the worker’s ability to understand and correctly transcribe patient assessments and treatments reduces the chance of patients receiving ineffective or even harmful treatments and ensures high-quality patient care.

Many medical transcription at home workers telecommute from home-based offices as employees or subcontractors for hospitals and transcription services or as self-employed, independent contractors.

Medical transcription work at home, although not requiring a full 40-hour week, may require the employee to be on call at any time. The primary function of this position is to listen to dictated recordings made by physicians and other health care professionals and transcribe them into medical reports, correspondence, and other administrative material.

Using a headset to listen to the recordings, and a foot pedal to stop, pause and stop these recordings is a requirement. Many of the online medical transcription at home jobs sites have links promoting these various products for their potential workers.

However, the most important function of the medical transcription work at home worker is to have a clear understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, pharmacology and treatment assessments. To this end, several online medical transcription employers may mandate the certification of the job applicant.

Most online employers offer this certification course while at the same time, maintaining employment. It also goes without saying; the employee must maintain strict patient confidentiality as it pertains to the information they are asked to transcribe.

There are some drawbacks to this type of work; whether working at home or an office. Sitting for hours at a time can be problematic. Workers can suffer wrist, back, neck or eye problems associated with the strain and repetitive motion used in completing daily tasks.

In addition, while work at home medical transcription services may be sporadic, nonetheless the employee may find it stressful to not only complete the assignment, but be accurate and productive as well.

Currently, most employers provide software in addition to peripheral tools to assist the employee in effectively completing each assignment. Many transcription workers receive dictation over the internet and are able to quickly return transcribed documents to clients for approval.

Transcriptionists working in areas with standardized terminology, such as radiology or pathology, are more likely to encounter speech recognition technology. However, use of speech recognition technology will become more widespread as the technology becomes more sophisticated.

For the moment, however, the tools currently provided are sufficient for the medical transcription work at home worker to effectively master the information given, and produce output commensurate with employers’ expectation.
