I have been in medical transcriptionist jobs for 17 years and am looking at home medical transcription. My first two years was in radiology, neurology, and non-invasive cardiology. I have been transcribing psychiatric transcription for a medical transcription clinic for about 15 years now.

I type 120-140 WPM and have been told that at home medical transcription would be ideal for me.

Also, we plan on moving out of state in less than a year (from Oklahoma to West Virginia), and I will need another job. My question is will my experience be good enough (since I’ve been transcribing only psychiatry for the past 15 years)? Will I need a refresher course? I have an associate’s degree in Medical Secretarial Science from a two-year university (OSU-Okmulgee — Okmulgee, Oklahoma)

Because of your experience, I would say you could get a medical transcription from home job with litle problems and some medical transcription training would be helpful too. You might try looking for a psych account first, but if you can’t find one, search for radiology transcription jobs.

I’m not sure that you could get an acute care account since you don’t actually have experience with that. I advise you to search out home medical transcription as it is a great opportunity in todays economy and this site gives valuable information on all aspects of MT. Good luck!

Where can I go to find a work at home medical transcription job?

If you are trained, try www.mtdaily.com! If you are not trained, then you must start with a great MT program that offers all 3 levels of the SUM CDs

I am an RN with excellent typing and computer skills. I have not taken any medical transcription courses. I feel like I am completely capable of medical transcription, but will any company hire me without any actual courses? There are so many courses available online I can’t tell if they are a scam or not (does anyone actually find work after completing the courses).

Thanks.

No, no one will hire you except for possibly a small physician’s office. Hospitals and all online companies require knowledge in medical transcription itself, from schooling, as well as on-the-job experience in the field.

Editors Comment:  From our research nurse medical transcriptionists are in demand.  It may be worth you contacting your local AHDI group and getting their view for your region.

My friend is going to school for medical transcriptionist! Shes got a really good head on her shoulders and she is already talking about buying a house and cars but I dont want her to get too over her head! Can someone help me out with salaries and the type of pay system they have you on??

Thanks alot!

Totally agreed Cathy!

Everyone thinks they can just become a MT and start working at home and have the easy-life, but that’s not at all how it works. It takes excellent schooling and years of experience to be able to work at home. And even if your friend is going to an *accredited* school where she will be able to get a good job, she certainly can’t rely on making the same amount every paycheck. It’s incredibly variable.

Has anyone ever taken this course at home? Is it a scam,or can you really make money doing it? Do you think its a hard course? Would love some detail or imput please I put this in this catagory because Im sure alot of moms have checked in to this as a way to stay at home with their kids and still make $

My mom is a medical transcriptionist from home. She took a course, like the ones you see advertised on TV. She didn’t think it totally prepared her, but she fortunately got on with a company who was willing to train her. Most companies want several years experience before they’ll hire you.

You also should look at the difference between being an employee or an independant contractor. Employee gets benefits but you usually gotta set hours and meet minimums. ICs are usually more free to work when they want/can, but no benefits.

Also consider the quality of work. So many doctors are foreign and VERY hard to understand. Also, depending on the system the company uses, sound quality could suck. Don’t think it’s an easy job you can just pick up and do at will with kids running around. My mom said there was no way she ever could have done it when my bro and I were kids.

Wow, I sound really negative…lets go positive for a little while. You can work from home in my jammies! If you’re a night owl, you can set your hours to work at night! Sorry, that’s all the positive I can think of now…my mom’s been struggling with her company for a couple years now, so all I hear is negative. Give it a try if you want…or you could give general transcription a shot. It doesn’t pay as well, but it’s usually easier and more flexible

How hard is it to find a medical transcription job?

How long did it take you? What is the hourly pay? Any tips for finding a good medical transcription job?

I got my first MT job before I had even graduated from college. Once I did graduate, I had 3 other job offers that I had to turn down. MTs should earn a min. of $9.00/hr, but can earn much more if they type extra. At the place I first started, if you could type 14 mins of dictation an hour, when there was extra work, you could earn $65/hr!!!

My tips? Go to a real school, not an online one. Getting a degree is better than getting a certificate, but either will work if it’s from a reputable school. Don’t expect to work at home until you have AT LEAST a year of on the job training at a hospital. It’s just not going to happen any other way.

I think home medical transcription sounds a great profession to me. I type 100-120 words per minute I worked for two years in multi-specialty transcription (1991 through 1993) October 1993 – Current: I work for a mental health agency where I am a medical transcriptionist by title.

I still type doctor’s notes, but mostly type meeting minutes now, so I’ve been out of multi-speciality transcription for a long time.

Also, my husband is on Social Security Disability for a refractory seizure disorder (he cannot work and he stays home). He is Cherokee Indian, so he gets free medical care. I am thinking of doing home medical transcription so I can stay home with my disabled husband and better use my abilities.

What are some good, legit medical transcription companies, especially those that offer health insurance? Any serious responses would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Please DO NOT bother to send me spam, because I WILL report you. I know this seems harsh, but this is a serious inquiry which could have implications for me and my husband’s future.

Thank you in advance.

I’m sorry that you have so much on your plate these days. Regarding ‘work at home’ job ads, just about all are a scam especially if asking for money upfront or for personal info which can put one at risk for identity theft: http://www.ftc.gov and can click ‘identity theft’ or such.

General career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco. I suggest you do a search on home medical transcription, this is a great opportunity with the way the world economy is at the moment. Also check out medical transcriptionist jobs as many people are being laid of and are looking to earn an income.
