Check careerbuilder.com or the U.S. Department of Labor websites for info on how many transcriptionists will be projected for your area.
I do the work part-time and I don't see much projected at least in my state. So it may require you to relocate once you get a certificate.
Typical pay for transcriptionists to start is between $10.00-14.00 an hour, depending on whether it is hospital, at home, or a doctor's office.
Personally, I would take a course in Medical Office Manager or Medical Assistant. Work projections in all states are to go up for these positions. References : U.S. Department of Labor

It is better to search for good companies, who provide training as well as job after completition of the course and less cost. You can go through http://www.andhrascribe.com They have office in California. References :
Course prices vary. You get what you pay for. The typical range for a GOOD course is $1500-$3500. It's worth it. There are a lot of jobs and the pay is very good if you are a productive MT. Choose a good school because that is the foundation of your success. References : http://www.mtacc.net
