Medical transcription is almost already a paperless job. Transcribed files are uploaded into the hospital records in the computer system. The physicians refer/access them in the computer system as and when required. As someone already mentioned, there will always be tough dictators whose dictation is hard to understand and whose transcription would require lot of hearing skills and transcription experience. These physicians always require the skills of transcriptionists 24/7. Even with the electronic health records and voice recognition software, MTs will always be needed to edit and verify the content of the health records. Furthermore, not all medical facilities will jump on board with all of this, and those facilities will still require transcription. I check with a program director at my local community college and in three to five years, a lot more medical facilities are going into electronic records. They are trying to go paperless.
