A medical transcriptionist (MT) is regularly referred to as medical language specialist. They specialize in medical language and health care documentation.

Their work involves interpreting and transcribing dictation by physicians and other health care professionals. They use a digital system, tape or voice file, with ear phones, usually a foot pedal for start-stop control and a word processing program. Their job is converting the speech file to digital text.

They transcribe patient assessment, therapeutic procedures, clinical course, diagnosis, prognosis, etc. They edit the dictated material for grammar and clarity as is necessary and appropriate.
