At Home Medical Transcription Questions?

I have been a medical transcriptionist jobs for 17 years and am looking at home medical transcription. My first two years was in radiology, neurology, and non-invasive cardiology. I have been transcribing psychiatric transcription for a medical transcription clinic for about 15 years now.

I type 120-140 WPM and have been told that at home medical transcription would be ideal for me.

Also, we plan on moving out of state in less than a year (from Oklahoma to West Virginia), and I will need another job. My question is will my experience be good enough (since I’ve been transcribing only psychiatry for the past 15 years)? Will I need a refresher course? I have an associate’s degree in Medical Secretarial Science from a two-year university (OSU-Okmulgee — Okmulgee, Oklahoma)

Because of your experience, I would say you could get a medical transcription from home job with little problem and some medical transcription training would be helpful too. You might try looking for a psych account first, but if you can’t find one, search for radiology transcription jobs.

I’m not sure that you could get an acute care account since you don’t actually have experience with that. I advise you to search out home medical transcription as it is a great opportunity in todays economy and this site gives valuable information on all aspects of MT.

Esp. places like Bhopal , Indore , Delhi,( Or NCR )
In every place, there are good institutes these days: they even pay you stipend during training! Look out in newspapers for advt’s, esp. week-end editions!

Where is the cheapest online school to get medical transcription training and is it a good career for a guy?

I have a couple of male coworkers. I also have a few male friends and family members who work as Medical Transcriptionists. =) Most employers require years of exerience. HOWEVER, many will waive this requirement if you graduate from an AHDI ‘approved’ school.

AHDI is the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity – www.ahdionline.org (formerly known as the American Association for Medical Transcription). AHDI sets the standards for MT courses. Employers know that graduates of these ‘approved’ courses have gained the skills necessary to begin their career as an MT.

If your looking into medical transcription pay the extra in tuition to attend an ‘approved’ school. When I was researching school options, I called several MT employers. I spoke to their Human Resources departments and asked about getting started in the field. All of them recommended attending an AHDI approved program. Many people have received training through inadequate programs only to find out that they are unable to find a job.

I attended Career Step and received a job (at-home) less than a week after graduating. I’ve received several more job offers since, but have stuck with my original employer. It can be a difficult job, but I love it! I recommend CS because they are partnered with MANY employers, self-paced (you can finish in a few months or take as long as over a year or two), and more affordable than the other top 2 courses.

Plus, I have personal experience (and success) with the program. Attending your local community college will give you a good chance at a job in-house, but if you are wanting to work from home, an online ‘approved’ course is the way to go.

I am considering a career in medical transcription and am wondering if you must be certified, have a degree, or is it something you learn on the job? I’d like to do it from home on a part time basis. Any info would be great, thanks!

Do not be fooled by companies that say they will train you for free. They actually charge nearly $500 for their medical transcription training software and FEW people ever actually get hired. I’m surprised the company linked on this thread is still in business to be honest w/ you. You can train either w/ an online school, be wise, and choose a good one. You can also train through a community college.

I trained with www.meditec.com. They have an awesome internship program to help you get started with your first job. You do not have to be certified to work. However, the AHDI does have two levels of certification testing for MTs, IF you want it.

Graduating from a good school should train you well enough to pass the RMT exam, if you want to take it. You can work w/o it. Then, after you have a few years of acute care transcription experience, you can test for the CMT. Your medical transcription training will take 2-3 years depending on your experience.

I would like to find a great medical transcription online school. I would like to go straight from completing the course to working out of my home, so I can still be home with my 2 children. I was also wondering how difficult it is to get hired working from home if I’ve never had on the job training?

I took my course through Education Direct–I think they are called Penn Foster now–and I enjoyed every minute of it!! Going straight to completing the course into home medical transcription work can be difficult, but it definantly can be done. Once you are finished with your medical transctiption training there are a couple sites you can go to to look for work.

http://mtstars.com and http://mtjobs.com and quite often they hire new people for at-home work.

Get good grades and you will go far. Medical Transcriptionsist + english (if you are an ESL) is one of the biggest needed fileds, you can go from large hospitals to dr. offices, and clinics etc.

Insurance companies would use you too. With that background, there are many agencies that will use you since there are so many people seeking medical attention (and this trend will not end.) Get good grades, and you will go far.
