I have been in medical transcriptionist jobs for 17 years and am looking at home medical transcription. My first two years was in radiology, neurology, and non-invasive cardiology. I have been transcribing psychiatric transcription for a medical transcription clinic for about 15 years now.
I type 120-140 WPM and have been told that at home medical transcription would be ideal for me.
Also, we plan on moving out of state in less than a year (from Oklahoma to West Virginia), and I will need another job. My question is will my experience be good enough (since I’ve been transcribing only psychiatry for the past 15 years)? Will I need a refresher course? I have an associate’s degree in Medical Secretarial Science from a two-year university (OSU-Okmulgee — Okmulgee, Oklahoma)
Because of your experience, I would say you could get a medical transcription from home job with litle problems and some medical transcription training would be helpful too. You might try looking for a psych account first, but if you can’t find one, search for radiology transcription jobs.
I’m not sure that you could get an acute care account since you don’t actually have experience with that. I advise you to search out home medical transcription as it is a great opportunity in todays economy and this site gives valuable information on all aspects of MT. Good luck!

Whats your take on Medical Transcriptionist jobs? Are they legit stay at home kind of work or scams?
Has anyone ever taken this course at home? Is it a scam,or can you really make money doing it? Do you think its a hard course? Would love some detail or imput please I put this in this catagory because Im sure alot of moms have checked in to this as a way to stay at home with their kids and still make $
My mom is a medical transcriptionist from home. She took a course, like the ones you see advertised on TV. She didn’t think it totally prepared her, but she fortunately got on with a company who was willing to train her. Most companies want several years experience before they’ll hire you.
You also should look at the difference between being an employee or an independant contractor. Employee gets benefits but you usually gotta set hours and meet minimums. ICs are usually more free to work when they want/can, but no benefits.
Also consider the quality of work. So many doctors are foreign and VERY hard to understand. Also, depending on the system the company uses, sound quality could suck. Don’t think it’s an easy job you can just pick up and do at will with kids running around. My mom said there was no way she ever could have done it when my bro and I were kids.
Wow, I sound really negative…lets go positive for a little while. You can work from home in my jammies! If you’re a night owl, you can set your hours to work at night! Sorry, that’s all the positive I can think of now…my mom’s been struggling with her company for a couple years now, so all I hear is negative. Give it a try if you want…or you could give general transcription a shot. It doesn’t pay as well, but it’s usually easier and more flexible

I think home medical transcription sounds a great profession to me. I type 100-120 words per minute I worked for two years in multi-specialty transcription (1991 through 1993) October 1993 – Current: I work for a mental health agency where I am a medical transcriptionist by title.
I still type doctor’s notes, but mostly type meeting minutes now, so I’ve been out of multi-speciality transcription for a long time.
Also, my husband is on Social Security Disability for a refractory seizure disorder (he cannot work and he stays home). He is Cherokee Indian, so he gets free medical care. I am thinking of doing home medical transcription so I can stay home with my disabled husband and better use my abilities.
What are some good, legit medical transcription companies, especially those that offer health insurance? Any serious responses would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Please DO NOT bother to send me spam, because I WILL report you. I know this seems harsh, but this is a serious inquiry which could have implications for me and my husband’s future.
Thank you in advance.
I’m sorry that you have so much on your plate these days. Regarding ‘work at home’ job ads, just about all are a scam especially if asking for money upfront or for personal info which can put one at risk for identity theft: http://www.ftc.gov and can click ‘identity theft’ or such.
General career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco. I suggest you do a search on home medical transcription, this is a great opportunity with the way the world economy is at the moment. Also check out medical transcriptionist jobs as many people are being laid of and are looking to earn an income.

Would you like to know about medical transcriptionist jobs? There are many resources available to enable people to make money on a part-time basis, online as well as offline, and many of those can be done from home.
While some positions may require specialized training, most can be performed with little or none. For example, the field of data entry is open as many companies are outsourcing the inputting of information to outside companies.
Most of the data input opportunities are available to be worked at home from your own computer. A similar field is in home medical transcription services, medical as well as legal, among others, where clients will submit via email or file transfer digital sound recordings and you transcribe them into a text document.
The field is continuing to grow, despite the ability to digitally record and maintain files, there still remains a need to maintain written documentation.
Another method of earning part time cash is through online auctions. You can make some money by cleaning out your basement and garage and putting them up for sale on an online auction and if someone wants your stuff, you can make money off your trash, many times you can make more than having a garage sale.
However, if you are looking to make a steady income from online auctions there are some drop shippers with whom you can connect to list items from them onto your auction sites. If the item sells, you pay your price for that item and the company ships the merchandise to the customer.
There are also some sites offering paid surveys that can be filled out online at home at your convenience. You will be notified of available surveys and how much it pays to fill them out and you pick and choose which ones you want to do.
There are also sites looking for people to write short advertising copy for internet ads. Some experience may be required, but for those accepted in this part-time, work-from-home position, it can provide a reasonable income.
Many search providers are always looking for researchers to develop and provide content for internet search sites. While having basic knowledge of a subject is helpful, a little time on research can provide you with enough knowledge to be considered an expert on some information search sites.
Additionally, some people are willing to pay for “expert” advice on niche subjects. If you maintain a web log you may try to provide expert advice on specific areas in which you are almost an expert, looking up any information you don’t know and slowly becoming a real expert.
Advertisement on mapping sites is a growing entry in making money part time as is the production of video for web broadcasts. Bloggers are also finding a nice income by placing information on blogs about specific companies or products.
