A medical transcriptionist needs to be a certain type of person. Being passionate about medicine is certainly an advantage, although as knowledge increases this can develop.

The attributes below are all characteristics that really are essential for you to make a great medical transcriptionist.

• A good listener – It is essential to be a good listener when working as a medical transcriptionist. Your job is to listen to recordings of the dictation of health care professionals and interpret this and transpose into text documentation. You listening skills need to be advanced to avoid errors from: Misunderstanding accents or foreign doctors; being distracted by background noise; losing your focus and incorrectly transcribing the information.

• Detail oriented – You must have an eye for detail. It is extremely important for a medical transcriptionist (medical language specialist) to pick up any errors. The result of mistakes in this field can be death, so it is important to be accurate in your work.

• Self disciplined – This is particularly relevant for anyone choosing to take up a career in medical transcription from home. Without the self discipline to actually be there and keep working, you can so easily get caught up in distractions of other things at home. The self discipline keeps you doing the work and meeting work deadlines.

• Great with words – You need to have strength in the English language, particularly in spelling and grammar. Once again the detail becomes important. Poor grammar can change the interpretation of a recording. There is very little room for errors in medicine.

• Able to maintain deadlines – You need to be able to work to deadlines. There will be a need to have the flexibility if you are behind on your work to shift your other commitments and complete the work.

• Able to work on your own – Some people struggle with working alone and crave for the social interaction of co-workers. If you are working medical transcription from home, then you must be able to work by yourself without missing other people.

• Self motivated – In medical transcription there is often no one to motivate you, so you will need to be a self motivated person. There is not a boss calling over your shoulder for you to get on with your work. If you are not self motivated in your work and you do not perform – you will have no income!

Is a medical transcription degree necessary?

This question is often asked by those interested in working as a medical transcriptionist.

In some cases the degree counts because it may get you more money. It is not essential to have one and often the employer only cares about whether you can do the job.

The important thing is to become a competent medical transcriptionist. Schooling is great and certainly necessary if you are totally inexperienced in both the medical field and at transcription work.

Workplace experience however, will build up your competence and it is amazing how fast you can learn when you are dropped in the deep end, so to speak.

Even with the work experience, there can be advantages in becoming qualified.

So bearing in mind all that – is it worth getting the degree?

Well our suggestion is to go and get a medical transcription degree. If there is an opportunity to get work and gain experience before you are qualified, then do so. It will benefit you in your study as well.

How diffucult is it to find an entry-level medical transcription job after completeing a certificate program?

I am thinking about taking the medical transcription program at the local college, but I’ve read that most hospitals/Dr’s Offices will not hire without experience. Is this true? I understand that you need experience in order to work from home, through getting started in a hospital.

That’s true, being a good medical transcriptionist takes years of experience and of course places would rather hire someone with experience if they can. It just depends on where you live and what the job market is like there. I was able to get hired for medical transcription before I was even finished with college in a p.r.n. (as needed) position, which developed to part-time, which developed into a full-time job at a different place. You just have to get your foot in the door wherever you can. If that means filing in the medical records department for awhile, then go file and work your way up. If you have no experience in health care whatsoever, that will make it even harder to get a job. Try to get into it in some way!

Can I get a medical transcription job without the official training?

I am an RN with excellent typing and computer skills. I have not taken any medical transcription courses. I feel like I am completely capable of medical transcription, but will any company hire me without any actual courses? There are so many courses available online I can’t tell if they are a scam or not (does anyone actually find work after completing the courses).

No, no one will hire you except for possibly a small physician’s office. Hospitals and all online companies require knowledge in medical transcription itself, from schooling, as well as on-the-job experience in the field.

My friend is going to school for medical transcriptionist! Shes got a really good head on her shoulders and she is already talking about buying a house and cars but I dont want her to get too over her head! Can someone help me out with salaries and the type of pay system they have you on??

Totally agreed Cathy!

Everyone thinks they can just become a MT and start working at home and have the easy-life, but that’s not at all how it works. It takes excellent schooling and years of experience to be able to work at home. And even if your friend is going to an *accredited* school where she will be able to get a good job, she certainly can’t rely on making the same amount every paycheck. It’s incredibly variable.

I am an experienced medical transcriptionist having full infrastructure to work as a home-based medical transcriptionist, and I like to know any company, physcian or hospital who can outsource files on a daily basis and also payment per line basis. I can transcribe with excellent quality around 600 lines a day within the turn-around time. I have specialized in Orthopedics, GIGU, OB-Gyn and Physical Therapy files and having sound knowledge in other sections such as Ophthalmology, Pulmonay and cardiology, Neurology etc.

How hard is it to find a medical transcription job?

How long did it take you? What is the hourly pay? Any tips for finding a good medical transcription job?

I got my first MT job before I had even graduated from college. Once I did graduate, I had 3 other job offers that I had to turn down. MTs should earn a min. of $9.00/hr, but can earn much more if they type extra. At the place I first started, if you could type 14 mins of dictation an hour, when there was extra work, you could earn $65/hr!!!

My tips? Go to a real school, not an online one. Getting a degree is better than getting a certificate, but either will work if it’s from a reputable school. Don’t expect to work at home until you have AT LEAST a year of on the job training at a hospital. It’s just not going to happen any other way.
